The menopause transition is not only a time of reproductive changes, but changing health, including mental, cardiovascular, joint and metabolic health. This is because declining oestrogen and progesterone levels have a powerful impact on other parts of the body, including the liver, muscles, blood vessels, fat and brain cells.

It is now well researched that many of these health changes respond positively to lifestyle modification, which as a Health Coach, you are central to supporting them with. But how do we support women to make lifestyle changes when the behavioural research confirms they lack time, energy and motivation? 

Understanding the physiological and psychological changes midlife women experience allows you as a Health Coach to not only be empathetic to their needs, but to coach behaviour change strategies from an evidence-based framework.

Every single woman I interviewed positioned healthy ageing in undertaking daily vigorous exercise. But for many of my subjects, their vision of health wasn't going so well. Menopause coaching starts with understanding. The hormonal changes that women experience in midlife are complex. Add to this the compounding effects of ageing on the glands, nerves, muscle fibres, blood vessels and brain, and it’s no wonder there is so much confusion around menopause. It is my aim to distil the complex physiology in a way that is easy for you to share with your clients and empathise with.

The research is there.  All of the puzzle pieces just needed to be put together. Through many years of study, I have pulled together the most relevant women’s healthy ageing and behavioural change research for you… and provide you with all the scientific references, should you wish to extend your learning.

Midlife women are one of the hardest demographics to coach, because what they have done in the past to manage their exhaustion, sore joints, sleep, weight and anxiety suddenly isn’t working for them anymore. Add to that their lack of time and energy, and you may be finding that they are struggling to implement changes you suggest. On this course I provide you with tangible examples of motivational interviewing questions, relapse prevention strategies and menopause support strategies that I use with my clients every day.

An Introduction to the Science of Menopause for Health Coaches

Video Module Length: 1 hour

In Module 1, I want to help you understand why the menopause transition is so influential on a woman’s health as she ages. 

We will explore the three distinct phases of a woman’s menopause transition, the common symptoms of menopause, and the symptoms that aren’t being talked about. Then we will explore why menopause is such a vulnerable time for women and their health and look at the inflammatory conditions which are now evidenced to be associated with the menopause transition. 

You will come away with an understanding of why menopause is the ‘perfect storm for symptom chaos and health changes’.

Video Module Length: 1 hour

Not enough focus is placed on women-specific issues like miscarriage or menopause, and women are under-represented when it comes to important clinical trials. This has meant that not enough is known about conditions that only affect women, or about how conditions that affect both men and women impact them in different ways.’ [Policy Paper, Women’s Health Strategy for England, 2022]

Module 2 introduces you to menopause physiology, including key concepts in hormonal physiology. We will explore the three stages of menopause that women transition through as the ovarian function declines – perimenopause, menopause and post-menopause and how this affects homeostasis (balance) of other hormones in the body as a natural part of female ageing. For example, did you know that the sleep hormone melatonin changes as a result of the decline in oestrogen to try to sustain homeostasis? No wonder women then don’t have the energy to adhere to the lifestyle changes we suggest if their sleep is impacted by declining oestrogen.  

I will also introduce you to the compounding affect that the physiological changes due to ageing can have on a woman’s symptoms and health. This section explores topics such as inflammation, cardiovascular health, weight gain, gut inflammation, sarcopenia, osteoporosis and fibromyalgia.

There are two questions that we will explore in this important module. Firstly, why might women struggle to change their lifestyle behaviours in menopause? And secondly, as a Health Coach, how can you support them with evidenced strategies, specific to their age and stage of life?

In this module, we explore what the Exercise and Nutritional Behavioural Research tells us about the factors that determine poor adherence for midlife women and how to tailor your motivational interviewing questions and support strategies with midlife menopause and behaviour change research in mind.

When my symptoms overwhelmed me and I put on over 15kg of weight during menopause, despite eating healthy and exercising, I knew there must be something else going on. I made it my purpose to understand.

Although my original career was as an ICU nurse, I re-trained in Sports & Exercise Science and pioneered the Personal Training industry in New Zealand. Managing one of the largest gym-based Personal Training teams in the world, meant my role as a Coach, developing health behaviour-change strategies that promoted self-efficacy, self-determination and self-responsibility with clients, was extensive.

Once I left the fitness industry, I became a University lecturer and taught a number of papers that were focused on Health Promotion, Health Behaviour Change, Nutrition and Exercise Prescription.

But I was so interested in how to help midlife women change their lifestyle behaviour, that I undertook my Master’s studies in this area. I then went on to complete my Doctoral studies to explore women’s health and ageing through the midlife years. I’m so pleased I did, as it led me to set up My Menopause Transformation. My sole purpose is to educate both women and Health Professionals about how to manage the menopause journey using evidenced lifestyle change science.
