Have you ever wondered why, when menopause arrives, the weight loss strategies we have been taught no longer seem to work?
Many of us understand that oestrogen and progesterone are declining, but did you know that these hormones have a significant impact on other parts of the body, including our fat cells, gut, muscle and liver cells, all of which are involved in weight loss physiology?
Did you know that a lack of sleep interferes with fat mobilisation?
Did you know that fat cells are known to produce their own oestrogen?
Hi, I’m Dr Wendy Sweet (PhD), a Women’s Healthy Ageing Educator from New Zealand and the Founder of My Menopause Transformation. Every day I receive emails from women confused why they are still gaining weight, despite trying medications, supplements, high protein diets or heavy weight training.
My answer is always the same. If you aren’t sleeping or you are feeling stressed and tired or you have gut or joint health concerns, then you need to get on top of these issues first. For many women a condition called ‘oestrogen dominance’ keeps them in ‘fat storing mode’. I always say that to lose weight, we must first, stop gaining. When you stop gaining, this is the first sign that your metabolism is changing.
I hope this PDF helps you understand five of the key factors that could be driving your weight gain in midlife and beyond. It’s taken me years to pull all of the pieces of the puzzle together, but when we follow the women’s healthy ageing science, it makes so much sense.
