Menopause and Joint Health Course for Health & Exercise Professionals
Are your peri to post menopausal client’s aching joints affecting their ability to do the things they love? Maybe their knees are stiff when they get out of bed? Or their legs feel restless and heavy? Maybe they have fibromyalgia-like symptoms or have stopped exercising due to pain?
But, has anyone ever mentioned menopause?
Just over 80% of 500,000 women globally who have completed the MyMT™ Menopause Symptom Quiz have stated that they have sore joints, so if you are seeing women like this, then I’m not surprised. Researchers are only beginning to realise that musculo-skeletal pain is one of the most common symptoms of menopause, because oestrogen plays such an important role in joint lubrication, tendon strength and muscle fibers.
As a Women’s Healthy Ageing Researcher, my intention is not to replace the advice your clients may be getting from their Registered Physical Therapist or Medical Physician, about their changing musculo-skeletal health. Instead, it is to help you ‘connect the dots’ to understand the important interactions between changing hormones in midlife, connective tissue ageing, joint lubrication, muscle recovery, and lifestyle science.
In this 2-part Joint Health Series, you will deep dive into the physiology and then discover the powerful lifestyle science solutions that have helped thousands of women on the MyMT™ Programs find freedom in their joints. I can’t wait for you to discover what I did.

The Connection Between Menopause and Sore Joints
Did you know that...
Tendons have oestrogen receptors
The reduction of blood oestrogen level is associated with the reduction in tendon strength, decrease in collagen production, fibre diameter, density and increase degradation in tendon tissue.
Muscles lose size and density through menoapuse
This is a normal part of ageing, but when this happens it affects the way tendons work.
Ear canals contain oestrogen
The role of oestrogen in our ears is to help keep the tiny hairs upright, which normally help us with balance. In menopause, women often feel dizzy and lose their balance as oestrogen declines.
Collagen turnover is slower
This means that if peri to post menopausal women are doing too much high impact exercise their recovery is slower and they build up more inflammation in our joints and muscles.

Sarah - Physio
“Having trained with Dr Wendy Sweet (PhD), I now understand what is going on in the body that manifests as muscloskeltal problems but are actually related to menopause. I can’t wait to bring this information to my clients.”
Megan - Physio
“As a physio, approaching the inflammatory status as a systemic condition of a life phase has been a fascinating take on years of treating this age group. It now makes perfect sense why our normal approaches don’t work for this age group.”
Fiona - Exercise Physiologist

“Do you remember how free your joints felt when you were younger? You ran, jumped and skipped without all the aches and pains and stiffness that you’re feeling now. I longed to have this feeling back too.
We all like to think that what we do is unique, but in the case of MyMT™ I can honestly say that I have been there myself. As I sat there while my family went skiing without me, I knew I needed to do something about it.
My health became my project and I set to work – reading as much as I could as part of my Masters and Doctoral studies about how to turn around menopause symptoms through working with our hormones, not against them.
That was over 15 years ago now, and since then I have worked with over 18,000 women to help them turn around their symptoms using lifestyle science. And now my experience is available for you too, so you can help your clients!
For decades menopause has been seen as a ‘sickness’ and often not talked about. It is time to put menopause into wellness, not sickness.
You can read more about my story here. “
