Over the past decade since developing the My Menopause Transformation programmes, I’ve heard from thousands of women about how confused and frustrated they are about their weight gain. Many then turn to doing lots of exercise, or various forms of dieting and fasting in order to manage it, however, what they aren’t factoring in, is that their hormones are changing during menopause.

With this change in hormones as women move into their 50’s, then there are changes throughout the body as well – afterall, menopause is the natural transition into our ageing years ahead.

Then there is the fact that numerous women are arriving in their peri-menopause years, already overweight or not sleeping and this contributes to further gain in weight, because the fat cells are changing and producing their own oestrogen (oestradiol). This adds to the hormonal millieu too. When I put on 15kg of weight myself, I was exercising every day and eating in ways that were promoted via the fitness industry – high protein and fat. I was also on oral Menopause HRT, and this was adding more oestrogen to my body that my liver couldn’t clear.

But this was all wrong, so after years of teaching physiology and then doing my women’s health and ageing doctoral studies, I learnt that my approach was all wrong, because what I didn’t understand was that I was oestrogen dominant. I explain all of this in this video which I’ve called ‘The Science of your Menopause Weight Gain’.
