We all face numerous health challenges with our transition through menopause and into our post-menopause years. But perhaps of most concern is the change to our metabolic health due to changes in fat distribution as we age.
Excess weight increases your risk of heart disease, diabetes, and some types of cancer as you move into your post-menopause years. But as I found, it also affects your daily life, energy and motivation.
When I gained 15kg of weight, mostly in my breast tissue and underneath my diaphragm, I was so confused and worried. At the time I was taking HRT and numerous supplements, but none of the interventions suggested by my Doctor and Pharmacist were helping with my weight gain. Nor was the exercise or diet I was on at the time.
It was reading about metabolic syndrome in menopause (the collective name given to high cholesterol, altered insulin function, weight gain, high blood pressure and Type 2 diabetes) as part of my women’s health and ageing studies that changed everything.
It motivated me to explore the science of women’s middle-age weight gain, and of course, how to stop gaining and start losing fat tissue without crazy diets or exhausting exercise.
Whilst hormonal medications and supplements are often promoted to women as the only solution to managing menopause symptoms, health researchers actually say that lifestyle modifications should be the first choice for all women with menopause-related weight gain (Stachowiak et al, 2015).

For decades menopause has been seen as a sickness and often not talked about. When my own symptoms over-whelmed me and the endless supplements and medications I was taking weren’t working, especially for my weight , I decided to explore the science! It was time to put menopause into wellness, not sickness.
Through my women’s healthy ageing studies, I began to understand that if we don’t take back control of our health and symptoms in menopause, then our post-menopause years can lead to worsening health.
As my personal health was changing, I researched how we can turn this around and manage menopause using specific lifestyle change strategies that we need to put into action at this time of life.
I now realise that most lifestyle programmes are not targeted for our changing hormonal environment in menopause, so I set out to design my own.
Seven years later I can say that using my powerful discoveries have been ‘life-changing,’ not just for me, but for the thousands of women who have joined me on their journey.
