“It was the best investment I ever made in ‘me’.” – Sally Bower

Isn’t the photo of Sally biking through the forest with a big smile on her face, fabulous? When she sent this through to share with you, I smiled, because before commencing the MyMT programme, she felt like sleeping all the time – not biking! What a change!

Sally so kindly shares her story here with writer, Robbie Greenslade… I hope you enjoy it as much as I did reading it.

As a 55 year old ‘empty nester’, Sally was feeling cheated by menopause. It was the time in her life, with her grown children gone, that she wanted to enjoy some time with her husband doing the mountain biking they loved to do, which as so many women know, was not afforded to her while the kids were growing up.

But with her menopause symptoms causing so much fatigue, and as she wasn’t sleeping, Sally was becoming increasingly frustrated at her growing inability to keep up with her husband on the bikew which she used to be able to do. While she had always been physically active and fit and with her diet “pretty good really”, she was confused about why she was on a treadmill of diminishing returns in regards to her health and fitness in mid-life.

It wasn’t until a ‘liked’ the MyMT™ page on Face Book, that Sally decided to look into it. Now she is so pleased that she did. The information really ‘spoke’ to her. Working as a medical laboratory scientist meant that she had a leaning towards fact based information and what she read seemed to bring together pieces of information that she had been aware of, but in a way that was cohesive and made real sense. Sally also garnered a level of comfort that this was a personal journey that Wendy was sharing, so it felt more inclusive. Going to the website, Sally read the Success Stories and Testimonials,and decided to ‘give it a go’.

As one of her discoveries from the programme was that women need to change their nutrition to suit healthy ageing research, the next step was to talk with her husband, who does some of the couple’s cooking. This conversation was what concerned Sally the most, as she felt unsure of how the nutritional changes would impact on too, especially with his amazing support in the kitchen! But he quite happily bought into the suggestions so Sally set about reviewing how she shopped for food, keeping to the MyMT™ food planning and fabulous recipes. Some big wins in the first few weeks of being on MyMT™ confirmed for Sally that she was on the right track with everything she was learning. She had no idea how the type and timing of her food intake was affecting her sleep quality until she did the MyMT™ programme and at long last she was getting some decent nights sleep!

“Actually, it was lots of little things that have helped turn my symptoms around. I can see why Wendy has this programme as a 6-step integrated programme, because when you learn how everything ties together, it makes so much sense. What worked the most, was when I had completed the programme and put everything that Wendy had in there about the integration of food, sleep, exercise, hormonal health, stress management and temperature regulation. For example, with what I learnt to do on the sleep module, I started to turn around the length of my sleep without waking up, which was a savior, as when I did, I used to find it so difficult to get back to sleep. I also learnt how to get off sweet things and the specific strategies that I could use to do this. Now, I don’t have any cravings at all. I’m so amazed at how it all worked for me.”

From those first few weeks of getting such positive results, to now, Sally acknowledges that there has been so much more than she could have imagined, that she has gained from her journey. A bonus has been her 5kg weight loss, without even trying. But best of all, with those bike rides with hubbie to go on, Sally has the energy levels that she used to have. Soon, she was off to help complete the decking on the new house that she and Reece are enjoying together as well as thinking about her up-coming pilates class, which she credits as helping her with her deep-breathing.
