VIDEO: Oestrogen Dominance in Menopause Explained

Estrogen dominance during menopause can seem confusing because ovarian estrogen production is declining. However, this video explains that fat cells continue to store external estrogens, known as xenoestrogens, while also producing estrone, a form of estrogen created within visceral fat tissue. As weight increases, this stored and produced estrogen can become dominant in relation to progesterone.
Dr Wendy Sweet explains why supporting liver and gut health is essential for menopause weight management. The liver is responsible for metabolising much of the body’s estrogen, while the gut microbiome, particularly the estrobolome, influences how estrogen is processed and recycled. She also discusses the importance of quality sleep for overnight fat metabolism.
Estrogen dominance. It’s a confusing topic, isn’t it? The fact that we can be estrogen dominant during menopause, even though our estrogen levels are declining.
But here’s the thing. Fat cells have the highest number of estrogen receptors, including those in your breast tissue. When fat cells become enlarged, this isn’t only because of fat storage. They’re also storing excess estrogens found in foods, chemicals, pollutants, and alcohol. These estrogens come from outside the body and are called xenoestrogens.
Your fat cells, including liver fat cells, love storing them. For those of you who are overweight or obese, this is important information. Your body is no longer producing ovarian estrogen. Instead, your fat cells are storing any excess estrogen they can find.
Your fat cells also have a secret life. They produce a type of estrogen called estrone, particularly in the deeper visceral fat cells. So, when I’m talking about estrogen dominance, I’m not referring to the declining estrogen production in your ovaries. I’m talking about the storage and production of estrogen that occurs in fat cells.
When estrogen levels inside fat cells are high and women are putting on weight, especially around the diaphragm and the abdomen, estrogen can become dominant compared with the opposing hormone, progesterone.

Once broken down, these excess estrogens are transported to the gut, where a part of the gut microbiome, known as the estrobolome, influences how estrogens are recycled and transported back to fat storage areas.
This knowledge is the turning point for many of the women on my programs. Once they understand this connection, they can begin repairing their liver and gut health to help clear excess estrogens.
Women also need to sleep well throughout the night because poor sleep interferes with the body’s overnight fat-burning processes.
